Garifuna Revitalization of Intergenerational
And Oral Transmission Project

Introduction

The GRIOT initiative, inspired by the late Ignacia Garcia, affectionately known as Auntie Lilly, aims to revive and preserve the oral traditions of the Garifuna culture. Auntie Lilly was the heart of her community, imparting knowledge of Garifuna songs, medicine, and customs to both elders and younger generations. As the go-to person for all things Garifuna, her legacy lives on in GRIOT. Our mission is to capture and share the wisdom of Garifuna culture through interviews, songs, and stories from Gayusas (Garifuna choirs), artists, and culture bearers, ensuring these traditions remain vibrant and accessible for generations to come.
