Dr. Philip Castillo has done something that many politicians avoid doing. He has forced us to look in the mirror.

His article is not merely about unemployment or appliance repair. It is about a much bigger problem—the economic direction of Dangriga Town.

For decades we have been conditioned to believe that our prosperity depends on who forms the next Government of Belize. Every election cycle, politicians descend upon our communities promising jobs, promising projects, promising hope. Then the elections are over, and many of our people return to waiting… waiting for a government job, waiting for a handout, waiting for someone in Belmopan to remember Dangriga exists.

    That is not development.

    That is dependency.

And dependency is one of the greatest enemies of freedom.

Dr. Castillo reminds us of an uncomfortable truth: today, the Government of Belize is the single largest employer in Dangriga. That should concern every resident.

When one employer dominates a town’s economy, that employer also holds enormous influence over people’s livelihoods. It creates a culture where too many people feel they cannot question authority because their paycheck may depend on it.

A truly prosperous town does not rely on one employer.

It relies on thousands of entrepreneurs, skilled tradesmen, professionals, artisans, farmers, fishermen, tour operators, mechanics, digital creators, manufacturers, and innovators who generate wealth independently.

That is the Dangriga I want to see.

    We Must Raise Our Expectations

While I agree with Dr. Castillo that appliance repair presents one practical opportunity, I believe his larger message is even more important.

We must stop measuring leadership by how many temporary jobs politicians can distribute.

Instead, we should judge them by questions like these:

    • What new industries have you attracted to Dangriga?
    • How many sustainable businesses have been created under your leadership?
    • What vocational programs have you established?
    • How many young people have received technical training?
    • What incentives exist for entrepreneurs?
    • What investments have you secured that will still create jobs twenty years from now?

Those are the conversations mature communities have.

Dangriga Has More Potential Than We Are Using

We sit on some of Belize’s greatest assets.

    We are the Cultural Capital.

We have the North Stann Creek River.

    We have Gra Gra Lagoon.

    We have the sea.

    We have rich Garifuna history.

    We have extraordinary music.

We have culinary traditions recognized around the world.

    We have artists.

    We have craftsmen.

    We have fertile land.

We have intelligent young people full of ideas.

So why are so many leaving?

Why do so many graduates struggle to find meaningful work?

Why are talented young people forced to migrate simply to build a future?

    Those are leadership questions.

Stop Asking for Jobs. Start Demanding Opportunities.

This election season, politicians will once again ask for your vote.

When they knock on your door, don’t simply ask:

“Can you get my son a government job?”

    Ask them something bigger.

    Ask them:

“What is your economic plan for Dangriga?”

“What industries are you bringing here?”

“How will you help our young people start businesses?”

“How will you prepare our workforce for Artificial Intelligence?”

“How will you help us compete nationally and internationally?”

“How will you ensure Dangriga creates wealth instead of waiting for it?”

Those answers matter far more than campaign T-shirts and promises.

We Must Invest in Skills That Cannot Easily Be Replaced

Artificial Intelligence is changing the world.

    Automation is changing the workplace.

Many traditional office jobs may disappear over the next decade.

That means Dangriga must prepare now.

    We need stronger technical education.

    We need certification programs.

    We need apprenticeships.

    We need digital skills.

    We need electrical work.

    We need refrigeration repair.

    We need welding.

    We need marine mechanics.

    We need construction trades.

    We need renewable energy technicians.

We need coding and digital marketing.

    We need creative industries.

    We need tourism entrepreneurs.

Every one of these fields represents dignity, independence, and opportunity.

    Government Should Empower—Not Create Dependence

Government absolutely has an important role.

But its greatest role is not to become everyone’s employer.

Its responsibility is to create an environment where ordinary people can succeed.

    That means:

    • Better infrastructure.
    • Access to financing.
    • Technical training.
    • Transparent procurement.
    • Business-friendly policies.
    • Reliable internet.
    • Safe communities.
    • Investment promotion.

Government should build ladders—not lifelong waiting lines.

The Time for Passive Politics Is Over

Dangriga cannot continue accepting decline as normal.

We cannot celebrate ribbon-cuttings while our young people continue leaving.

We cannot applaud speeches while opportunities remain scarce.

We cannot allow election campaigns to distract us from asking difficult questions.

Our leaders—past, present, and future—must understand that the people of Dangriga are no longer satisfied with surviving.

    We intend to thrive.

Dr. Castillo has started an important conversation.

Now it is our responsibility to continue it.

Let us challenge every political leader, regardless of party, with one simple demand:

Stop teaching our people to depend on Government. Start building an economy where Government is no longer the only path to success.

Because the future of Dangriga will never be built by dependency.

It will be built by opportunity, innovation, entrepreneurship, and a people courageous enough to demand more.
